Solar Powered Security Lights
There was a time when most people with basic electrical and DIY skills could install their own security lighting outside, but those days are gone. Part P of the Building Regulations means that you must get a qualified electrician to install mains powered security lighting and certify the work once it has been done. Calling out an electrician isn’t cheap even if the light just needs to go on the outside of your house near existing cabling. If want your security light at the bottom of your garden to protect your shed, or 3 metres away from your house to cover your garage the cost will rocket. Firstly you will need to have an electrician run an external electricity supply from inside your house to where you intend to have your mains powered security light. You will then need to buy the light fitting and have the electrician install and connect it. Once that’s done you have on-going electricity costs and the costs of replacement bulbs. We estimate that a basic non-complicated security light installation will be around £200 including the cost of the unit. If you don’t have an RCD unit installed that price could rise to over £500. If you need outdoor lights further away from your property then you will need to run trunking to that location or have trenches dug if the cabling needs to go underground which can push costs way above £1000.

Solar security lights are a much simpler way to get outdoor lighting. Our solar security lights start at just £19.99 for the Evo15 Solar Security Light and end at £89 for the Astron64 Solar Security Light which is the best solar security light on the market. An Astron64 will rival a 120W halogen in terms of brightness and can be installed virtually anywhere in less than half an hour with minimal DIY skills. All our solar security lights come with everything you need in the box so there are absolutely no added extras needed. Once installed our solar security lights are 100% FREE to run and because LEDs have a lifespan of over 30,000 you will never need to change the bulbs!

Solar security lights with motion sensors
The most popular type of solar security lights come with motion sensors which are commonly known as PIR sensors (Passive Infra-Red). PIR sensors tell the light to illuminate when they detect heat from humans, animals and other objects. Most solar PIR security lights have settings on them which enable you to control the PIR just like mains powered security lights. Typically there are 3 settings available, LUX, TIME and SENSITIVITY. The LUX dial will tell the light how dark you want it to be before it will start detecting motion. Some customers want their outdoor lighting to detect motion when it is still twilight; others prefer it to be pitch black. The TIME dial will dictate how long the security light will come on for once it has detected motion. Typically you can set this from just a few seconds to well over a minute for each activation. The SENSITIVITY dial sets how sensitive the PIR is. Some people want their outdoor lights to pick up movement over a large distance, other just want to cover a small areas leading up to their door.

Remote controlled solar security lights
Our Astron Solar Floodlight and Evo15 Remote Controlled Solar Light are both activated by remote control which gives you light on demand whenever you need it. The remote control that comes with the Astron Solar Floodlight has a 50 metre range and you don’t even need to leave your property to use it. If you hear a noise outdoors at night and are worried it could be thieves you don’t even need to leave your bed to turn the light on (assuming you have the remote control to hand). We’ve all had that moment where an outdoor PIR light is activated by something and then turns off a few seconds later leaving us wondering what triggered it. The Astron can stay on for up to 12 hours on a full charge so you can leave the light on until you are ready to turn it off.

Dawn to dusk solar security lights
Dawn to dusk solar security lights will come on when it gets dark and stay on all night. These types of solar light are often quite a bit more expensive because they need much bigger solar panels and batteries to keep them going all night. Our Astron Solar Floodlight will do this job. As well as being remote controlled the Astron Solar Floodlight will work as an automatic light that comes on automatically at night and turns off automatically at dawn.
